Holiday Newsletter 2010

We hope our holiday newsletter finds you in good health and happiness. We pray you remember the true reason for the season, and that you had a very Merry Christmas with your loved ones.

Our 2010 was definitely a blessed year filled with many surprises and new experiences for us. From surprise family visits, health issues, new jobs and new places. God guided us through it all and we look forward to the new year!

Aniah,(our healthiest child this year) will be turning 4 in March of the new year and has grown so much. We continuously hear how she is tall for her age. This comes as a surprise because she has always been our little "short stuff" and now she is growing like crazy! She is obsessed with the color purple and ponies, (um, she would like a real one she says). Even though she is the youngest in the house she is definitely the boss. She loves to help and was my little assistant for Girl Scouts. Aniah is very smart and learns quickly. She can't wait to start school!

Ania turned 7 in October of this year. She is in first grade where spelling and lunch are her favorite subjects. We were surprised this summer by Ania being diagnosed with a skin disease called lichen planus. We went through alot of tests, biopsies, surgeries, etc with Ania this year. She was on oral steroids for 3 weeks and a topical cream as well...the oral steroids did work but didn't cure the disease. We recently found that tee tree oil is helping to clear up her remaining spots(see our previous blog entry "Tea Tree"). Ania was our child that had us in and out of the hospital and Dr.'s office this year. The day after her birthday Ania had a seizure. Further testing was done to determine the cause and nothing was found. That was her first and last seizure to date, thank the Lord! My mother in law informed us that Big Alton use to have seizures as a baby and no reason was found either, and he just grew out of them. We were concerned about Ania's happiness and self esteem because of all the medical issues she was experiencing and decided she should become a Girl Scout. Ania is a girly girl, very sweet, very giving, loves crafts and trying new things and making new friends... so this was perfect for her. She was happy to find out that her Nana and Mom were also Girl Scouts as little girls. She earned all of her badges and petals required before us leaving the troop to move. Besides the common cold, pink eye and ear aches this winter...she is very happy and healthy again!

Alston is 8 years old and in the 3rd grade. His favorite subject is Math and he's reading at a 4th/5th grade level. He will turn 9 in February of the new year. He played basketball for "Team Storm" and did very well as one of the top scorers. He also, briefly played basketball for "Lincoln Cats." He chose number 5, just like his Daddy. While sitting in the crowd you could frequently hear fans admiring his crossover for his age. Alston is growing very fast and is already in a size 6 and half shoe. He dreams of being very tall, so he eats a snack of steamed vegies and milk 3 times a day. He is very focused and determined to walk in his Daddy's shoes as a Professional Basketball player and practices at home all the time.We had no major health issues with Alston besides a strange rash under his arm that had to be removed with liquid nitrogen. Needless to say this was very uncomfortable for him and we are currently using tea tree oil to continue to clear the area.

Alton aka AJ turned 14 in November of this year. He's a Freshman in High school this year. He played basketball for his school and also took up drama class. In October he broke his right wrist by slipping in the kitchen via a spill made by Aniah. Mom freaked out, but AJ was very proud and he and Daddy thought it was cool because Daddy had the same fracture back in the day. AJ requested a red cast and had all of his friends and family sign it. Since it was his right hand, writing hand, it was difficult for him in the beginning but he soon adapted. His cast was removed just in time for the basketball season which he was really worried about. Big Alton has never pushed the issue for his boys to play basketball like him, but his secret desire is coming to life. AJ also wants to be a Professional baller like Daddy. He still enjoys gymnastics but is no longer training for the Olympics as his focus is academics, basketball and music.

Big Alton signed a 1 year contract with Ostrava, Czech Republic in July of this year. He is currently in his 10th year as a Professional Basketball Player. As the Vet of the team he earned MVP for pre-season tournaments. He also received a Eurobasket recognition of player of the week in October. Ostrava is currently in 5th place in the league and the team is playing great. Big Alton chose number 5 (Anita's favorite number) for this season and is averaging 13.8 points per game.

Anita's many endeavors continue. A couple new experiences she most enjoyed this year was taking on the roll of Ania's Girl Scout troop leader and volunteering as a "greeter/usher" at church. Anita and her co-leader Serena (also originally from Nebraska) led a troop of twelve, 6 year old girls. From writing, to wine consulting and everything in between, she is happy with her life as a virtuous woman. Besides taking care of family and managing her home, she herself experienced some health issues. She is very grateful that God has blessed her with a very supportive and loving Husband, the best kids ever, great friends and family who prayed with her and for her during those times. She was blessed with a job as a Professional fundraiser in July of this year and was just recently approached by Wines for Humanity for a career opportunity . She has always enjoyed charity work, volunteering and giving back. This job allowed her to work from home and travel with her Hubby as well. Anita traveled internationally solo for the first time in November. Being that we are a large family, the team Manager was having a very difficult time in finding accommodations for the Masons. The team owns only studio flats for the players and has never had a large family on the team before. So, the Manager called and offered her a trip to Ostrava to assist the team with this. Anita made arrangements with her Mother to keep the kids for 6 weeks and traveled to the Czech Republic alone. Anita and Alton missed their kids terribly and were surprised and disappointed at how slow the time went with their seperation. Although she accomplished her goal and found a very nice house, and the couple enjoyed some alone time....at the end of the day the time went by too slow and would've rather had the kids in the small studio. Anita and Alton are very happy to have the whole family back together again, in Arizona, for the Holidays. They look forward to the whole family moving into their new house, in a new country, in January!

~Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
God bless,
The Masons: Alton, Anita, AJ, Alston, Ania and Aniah.

*The kids really enjoyed creating "elf yourselves" last year, so we just had to do it again. Enjoy!:)

Prague-Christmas Markets

Alton and I had to travel to Prague this past Monday to the American Embassy because he lost his passport. We live 4 hours away from this amazing city so we decided to stay the whole day there. They have these beautiful Christmas markets and the city is big and glorious. It only took us an hour at the Embassy to get his passport so then we started our journey of pre-Christmas shopping for the kids, had lunch at TGIFridays and just explored the city of Prague. If you haven't been to Prague...you must visit! Oh happy day!

A 7 year old Gospel singer...

This little woman has an amazing story behind her inspiration to sing...she lost her mother to cancer at a young age and apparently has been singing ever since. I love how God has blessed her with a talent to influence others with his grace at such a young age. Her Father seems to be very supportive of her as well.....I mean she has her own album. Wow!

Oh and she sings Christmas songs too...

I think there is a cure?

This past summer Ania, (our 7 year old daughter) was diagnosed with lichen planus. Most of our friends and family heard about this because I requested prayer. Originally I was not going to blog about this in detail but I think there is a cure?...and want nothing more than to help anyone else that suffers with this skin disease. Ania's first treatment was oral steroids for 3 weeks and then a topical steroid cream. Although this seemed to help, it was only temporarily and the rash returned. Recently, her Nana found tea tree oil and did some research on its many uses....we've been using it ever since and her skin is looking normal again. We not only apply tea tree oil directly to the rash areas but we also put it in her bath water. Tea tree oil apparently has many uses and has a nice aroma...for us this has been an exciting discovery that we wanted to share.

Empire State of Mind-Ostrava

Alton played in Prague over the weekend, (they won!)....and after the game we went out to get a bite to eat....while we were there this video started playing on their flat screen...I'm sorry but we were in awe and thought it was hilarious! Its kind of annoying, but at the same time we think its unique and creative of this faux Jay-z and Alicia Keys...I mean obviously they put alot of time around the city filming this(please check out the city because this video saves me time on going around taking snapshots:), but we heard there was some controversy because they didn't get the legal rights to do this and apparently made alot of money in this country from this. So then, that's when fun turns into being disrepectful? As you know, Jay-z and Alicia Keys are platinum selling artists, which means that they are very talented and put alot of hard work in for this song. I know you might be thinking who cares, and why even blog about this, this isn't a typical blog entry from the Mason's, but in our household we love all types of music and this just really got our attention. If you recall the music awards when Jay-z and Alicia Keys were bombarded on stage by Lil Mama during their performance...that was very disrespectful, so it appears the Empire State of Mind is obviously a hit, but how far should people who aren't the artists be aloud to go with this? Just a thought...

Summer 2010

We had a summer full of  food, family, fun and some health unexpectancies....we spent most of our time by the pool and in the Doctor's office. I won't go in to detail on our blog but most of you know the details of the health issues we battled with this summer and into fall. I am pleased to announce that everyone is doing very well!

Alton and I celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary in May on the 27th. Alton and I take turns planning our anniversaries each year and this year was his turn. As usual he did very well with his planning and we had a romantic night of dinner and dancing. We had dinner at a new restaurant called "The White Chocolate Grill." I love to eat out and this restaurant definitely makes my list of  favorites. Everything was fabulous!

We had an awesome surprise 2 week visit by my Mom. She hadn't been out to Arizona for years and it had been almost a year since we seen her. When she heard we were back in AZ she booked herself a ticket, rented a car with a gps and literally snuck up on us at about midnight. We were all so shocked and our reactions were hilarious!
While she stayed with us she spoiled us with her cooking and cleaning. Of course we also had to hit up the mall together and a few choice restaurants that Nebraksa doesn't have. She loves the restaurant "My Big Fat Greek Restaurant." We had a wonderful time with her....time does fly when your having fun!

AJ got to visit San Diego with one of his good friends Addison. They were gone for 4 days. They spent lots of time at the beach, relaxing in their hotel, eating at hooters and took a ferry ride over to Catalina Island.

Although the summer seemed to fly by and we had originally planned to stay in Europe, it was definitely meant for us to be home and we're happy we were. Though some might find some of the situations we went through stressful, and trust me it wasn't easy, but at the end of the day we know it's God's plan and he has kept us and truly blessed us. We are too blessed, to be stressed!:)

Ladies Day

A couple of fellow basketwives, (Heather and Reggen) and their daughters drove in from Belgium to have a "ladies day" with me and my girls. We decided to have a day of lunch and play in the center of Amsterdam. We had lunch at The Hard Rock Cafe. The girls really enjoyed each other's company and got along perfectly...with that, we ended up spending several hours at the restaurant. We took lots of pix and left quite a mess, I'm sorry to say. Needless to say...all eyes were on us in our corner booth. Lol! Afterwards we had planned to go to the indoor playcenter that we had Nye-Nye's birthday party at, but it was closed for some reason? So, we ended up back at our place....the kids hung out in the playroom, had snacks and popsicles. Like the saying goes....time goes fast when your having fun and soon the ladies were back on the road and headed home. I'm the only wife on the Amsterdam team so it was really nice to have some in person girl talk. Everyone's season is also coming to an end so it was good to get together before our summer vacations. Ania, Aniah and I really had a great ladies day!

Play-off!

Our basketball season officially came to an end on Sunday when we lost our second game in the playoffs. We played against Bergen op zoom with the ending score of 74-78. It was a close game, in fact we were winning 74-72 with just 28 seconds in the game! I just knew we had won, but nope they got us again. The game was very exciting and intense, but Alton lead the team, played strong and had 20 points.
This season has been a bitter/ sweet one....we finished in 7th place for our regular season, we made it to the cup finals, Alton made the all-star team,  Alton was one of the leading scorers in the league, and ends the season as the 6th player with the most steals.

You know we always give our God the glory and praise for what he has done for us and will do for us because all things are possible through Him. We pray for a safe trip back home and we thank Him for blessings us with the opportunity for Alton to play in Amsterdam this season. We pray for his vision and guidance for the next basketball season and we wish all the best to the teams that continue to play in the playoffs....may the best man win!

32

On April 21st I turned 32 years of age. Thank you Jesus! I feel better than I've ever felt and I'm learning more than I've thought. My family gave me a party at home and  made me a cake. The day of, my Hubby woke me up to breakfast in bed, champagne and pink daisies. He later took me out to dinner, which was very nice. Alton normally gets me a new handbag for my birthday which I'm still deciding on. Gosh, there are so many nice ones out there, it makes it hard, but you gotta love fashion, right?!:)
Like always, we seem to celebrate longer than just the birth day...we went to dinner at one of our favorite jamaican restaurants with the Spencer's, as it was also Keith's birthday, AJ had a school talent show and it is also playoff time so everyday has been exciting.I thank the Lord for blessing me with another year on this earth and I pray for many more years of good health and happiness to come!:)

He's Got Talent!...(AJ and friends in his school talent show.) The crowd screams "AJ" throughout the entire performance! He's very social and popular at school, while getting good grades. Alton and I are very proud of him and feel so blessed to have him as our son. We hope you enjoy the video...

All-Star

Alton made the All-Star team north. We appreciate your votes and prayers, and in the end it was the votes of the coaches that qualified him. The kids really enjoyed the festivities at the gala, but unfortunately we lost by 2. The ending score was 103-105.

"Good Old Mason!" (continued)

Unfortunately we did not win the Holland cup. It was another exciting and tough game! We were determined but the baskets just wouldn't fall for us and the refs weren't on our side either. The ending score was 63-88 and "Good Old Mason" had 10 points. We still consider it an honor and a blessing to have made it to the finals and we look forward to what the Lord has in store for the rest of our season.
